For those who want to explore a different part of Kerala Backwaters by kayak, Paravur Lake has protected waters for kayaking in safe conditions and opportunities for swimming near sandbars.
Lower Paravur Lake has three naturally formed sandbars, each with very distinctive features. The second largest sandbar among them is named after Black Devil Snails as these are abundant near the sandbars. These snails are also known as Lava Snails and they are very uncommon on the west coast of India.
Black Devil Snail Sandbar can be reached via a short kayaking trip not taking more than 30 to 45 minutes one way. Out of the three sandbars, the Black Devil Snail Sandbar – the main attraction – may only appear during low tides and summer. During high tides and southwest monsoon rain season, it may be submerged.
If the Black Devil Snail Sandbar is submerged during the season, then the trip is guided to the largest sandbar which is stable and remains above water level at all times. The largest sandbar has a bay shaped area which provides ample space for large gathering and parking of kayaks.
Black Devil Snail Sandbar is a very ideal location for a well deserving break from the urban fast paced life. This intertidal flat is surrounded with fine sand and provides a unique trail in the waterbody for a walk or swimming. It is possible for walking between sandbars during low water level. If guests are interested for walking between the sandbars, please request the Team Lead Guide for support.
